Abbeyfield Houses Society of Kingston is a registered charity which
intends to build non-profit housing for seniors. It is affiliated
with Abbeyfield Houses of Canada, which
includes 40 local Abbeyfield Societies across Canada, with 29 Houses
currently operating and another 10 planned or under construction, and
which in turn is associated with
Abbeyfield International, headquartered in the UK.
An Abbeyfield House provides a much needed housing choice for seniors
who no longer wish to live in their own home and yet do not need the
services of a home for the aged or a nursing home. Abbeyfield is a
very viable and realistic option to the perceived step from family
home to nursing home.
Abbeyfield offers a warm, family-style House and a balance between privacy
and companionship, security and independence, combined with the special
caring element provided by dedicated volunteers and the consistency of a
single House manager.
Age and loneliness are the prime considerations for residency, together
with level of health and compatibility with other residents.
Each House creates a sense of "belonging" that is truly preventative
medicine. With a history of nearly five decades, our statistics show
that most Abbeyfield residents take on a new lease on life. They are
more fit and more inclined to live out their natural life cycle (and
longer) without becoming debilitated.
The motto of the Abbeyfield Society of South Africa is: "Caring for
the elderly is everyone's concern. Everyone's - Not everyone else's."
