Where is the Kingston Abbeyfield House? When will there be a Kingston Abbeyfield House?
After some years of looking for an ideal location for Kingston's first Abbeyfield House, we have found it!
In July, 2010, we found a great place to build a House, at 247 Portsmouth Avenue,
and we have purchased an option to buy the property. We plan to do so as soon as possible.
It's very close to the Kingston Seniors' Centre and public transportation, to St. Lawrence College,
the Health Unit and Ongwanada, and not far from shopping. There's room for our proposed 16 unit
energy efficient House, parking, and gardens and garden plots.
The decision to develop this site has resulted in a flurry of activity.
Over the past few months, the Abbeyfield Kingston Board has been active in negotiating an
agreement for the option to purchase the property, meeting
with Bruce Downey from Hughes Downey Architects on the design of the new House, exploring
with City staff the requirements for rezoning and permit approvals, developing
a business plan for consideration by funding agencies including Canada Mortgage
and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and our Credit Union, preparing and submitting applications
for funding from various organizations and agencies, drafting and implementing marketing
and communications strategies, working with the Pro Bono legal project at Queen's Law School
on the development of a "life lease" occupancy plan, and updating this web site to include
the current information and links to Abbeyfield videos.
We have communicated with the neighbours close to our planned new Abbeyfield House, and are planning
to meet with them in the near future to discuss our plans and their concerns.
We will do our best to keep everyone informed as plans progress, by this website and by
periodic Newsletters, and at our AGM on April 14th.
